1CE
1 Concealed edge (on flush doors with one stile concealed with hardwood lip).

2CE
2 Concealed edges (on flush doors with both stiles concealed with hardwood lips)

BALANCED DOOR
A balanced door is when the stile structure and face and back of the door is so designed that either edge of the door can be used as the hanging edge or the lock edge, and either end of the door can be used as the top or the bottom.

BEADED CUT OUTS
The opening provided to flush doors with glazing beads for site glazing.

BRACES
Timber members fitted diagonally between the rails and stiles of a framed door (usually after hanging). Braces must be fitted to rise from the hanging stile outwards to counteract the door raking (sagging).

CASEMENT DOOR
A door in which the area within the frame is grazed with one or more glass panels

CALIBRATING
The process of sanding the surfaces of a flush door blank to give it perfectly true and even faces before over veneering.

CLOSING BLOCK
A solid block in the top part of a door core, into which closing mechanism screws may be fixed

CORE
The internal structure of a flush door.

CORE FILLER
An evenly distributed inner structure of a flush door that fills or partly fills the space between the
core frame components and that rigidly supports the door cladding in a true plane

CROSS BANDING
(Flush doors) the structural skin of the flush door, consisting either of hardboard or 3mm thick hardwood veneer.

CUSTOM-MADE DOOR
A door that is non-standard in size or design and made for a particular fitting or purpose.

DOOR FRAME
The frame into which a door is fitted

DOUBLE ‘LEAF DOOR (DOUBLE DOOR)
A door that has two leaves (a left-hand one and a right-hand one)

E/E
Exposed edges on a flush door

EXTERIOR DOOR
Door designed to cope with normal exterior atmosphere. Note that exterior doors are not designed to cope with continuous direct sunlight or driving rain.

FACE
That surface of a door that is first seen by a person entering a building or room

FACE VENEER
The decorative veneer of a flush door covering the cross banding.

FL & B
Framed ledged and batten door.

FLB & B
Framed, ledged, battened and braced door.

FLUSH BACK
(Framed doors) term used when both batten and middle rail and bottom rail are concealed by a ply wood covering fitting flush with the top rail and stiles of a framed door.

FLUSH DOOR
A Door, the two major surfaces of which are generally flush, but that may have moulded surface features or glazed panels, and that consists of cladding bonded to stiles, rails and a core filler

H&C RAIL
(Flush doors) extra rail provided to give solid fixing point for hat and coat hook.

HC
Hollow core door.

HINGE BLOCK
(Flush doors) extra timber added to give strength and to spread stresses at the hinge position.

HW STILES
Hardwood stiles (flush doors with exposed stiles made from hardwood

INTERIOR DOOR
Door designed for interior use only.

LOCK BLOCK
(Flush doors) additional timber provided to add strength round the lock position and solid fixing points for lock furniture.

LIPPING
A strip of paper or veneer so fixed to the edge of a door that it completely conceals the

LOUVRE DOOR
A door that has slats (usually running horizontally) so spaced as to afford ventilation

MEETING STILE
The stiles of a double door that meet when the door is closed

OB
Open back framed doors term used to indicate that the battens of a framed door are exposed on the inside

PATTERN DOOR
A door that has an embossed, engraved, or other type of textured surface

PANEL DOOR
A door in which the area within the frame is panelled with one or more panels

PLAIN CUT OUTS
Opening provided to flush doors to accept ventilation grilles

PLY BACK
Framed doors term used when ply wood covering is fixed hard against the inside of the battens of a framed door (all rails left exposed).

POST LIPPED
Flush doors with hardwood edges applied after Veneering.

PRE-LIPPED
Flush doors with hardwood edges applied after veneering in sSemi solid and solid laminated doors.

PRE-HUNG DOOR
A door supplied in a frame and intended for installation without any trimming or carpentry

RMS
Rebated meeting stiles normally used on all types of doors when paired.

ROUNDED STILES
Used on all types of doors when hung on floor springs to swing. Both hanging and meeting stiles may be rounded or the hanging stiles may be rounded and the meeting stiles square on the same door.

SCREEN DOOR
A screen door is intended for use together with an exterior door, and allows the passage of air into a building without letting in insects or blown debris door covered with wire mesh, gauze, expanded metal, or a combination of these see figure

SL (SE)
Semi- Exterior quality Solid Laminated door.

SL (IN)
Interior Solid Laminated door.

SS
Semi solid door.

STABLE DOOR
A door that consists of a top and a bottom leaf, where the top leaf can be opened independently of the bottom leaf

TELEGRAPHING
The appearing of outlines of the door components through the sheeting that forms the face of the door

VOE
Veneer over edges. Flush doors when the face veneer is applied to the edges of a pre-lipped calibrated door blank.

WARP
Any variance from a true or plane surface of a door (in the form of a cup, bow, spring or twist, or any combination of these. Usually acceptable up to 6mm

WIDTH OF CLEAR DOORWAY OPENING
The width of the opening left in a doorway when the fitted door is fully open

WEATHER BAR
Moulded timber section fitted to the bottom of exterior doors to prevent water running under the bottom of door.
