Introduction To Class E Fire Doors
What Are Class E Fire Doors?
Class E Fire Doors feature a 30-minute fire rating and are typically designated for residential buildings. These doors are installed between garages and main houses, as well as in multistory residential developments. They are commonly used as front doors for multi-unit flats that are up to three stories high (Res 3).
What Is The Purpose Of Class E Fire Doors?
Class E Fire Doors, often referred to as emergency exit doors or escape doors, are vital components of a building’s safety design. These doors help protect individuals by separating them from flames and hazardous gases during an evacuation. Additionally, they limit the fire’s spread, aiding in its containment and extinguishment.

Class E Fire Door Criteria
A fire door’s class or classification indicates how well it fares under these four main criteria:
Door Integrity
The door or assembly shall withstand the prescribed fire exposure without developing a straight-through gap or width that exceeds 6mm at any point of the door.
Fire Insulation
How well a door can keep the temperature of the fire at bay. (The temperature on the unexposed side is measured for a tolerance of below 140°C.) The door or assembly shall withstand the prescribed fire exposure without the mean temperature of the exposed face rising to more than 140degC above the initial ambient temperature or the temperature at any point of the face rising to more than 180degC above the initial temperature.
Door Stability
The ability to fulfil its design function of keeping an opening closed in the face of fire so that no fissure or opening wider than 25mm develops.
Impact Tests
(class C & D assemblies only). Enable the door to resist two successive impacts of sandbag 250mm in diameter and a mass of 27kg without the formation of any opening wider than 25mm.
The Class E fire door has the following ratings:
- Stability: 30minutes
- Integrity: 30minutes
- Insulation: 30 minutes
- Impact test: none
Construction And Available Sizes
Class E Fire Doors Construction
Class E fire doors come in two types of construction:
- Internal fire doors
- External fire doors
INERNAL FIRE DOORS
Internal fire doors are constructed using either magnesium oxide sheets or fire-resistant particle boards encased in hardwood edging on all four sides. This design allows the door to be trimmed to the desired size while maintaining its fire-resistant properties.
These internal fire door cores come with a variety of door skins, including paintable MDF, moulded panels, diverse grooving options, and an extensive selection of veneers for a natural wooden finish.
EXTRENAL FIRE DOORS
External fire doors are constructed using either galvanised cladding or weather-resistant hardwood veneers on both sides of the door core. The design also allows for trimming and customisation while maintaining fire resistance.
External fire doors come in a range of finishes, including paintable MDF, aluminium panels, and various veneers to match the building’s exterior aesthetic.
Class E Fire Door Sizes
The standard sizes for half-hour fire doors are:
- 813cm x 2032cm standard door size
- 900cm x 2032cm paraplegic door size
- 1630cm x 2032cm double door size
- 813cm x 2400cm tall door size
Benefits Of Class E Fire Doors
Besides providing you with a minimum of 30 minutes of protection from a fire, there are a few other lesser-known benefits of having fire-resistant doors installed.
Noise And Draft Control
The smoke seals on fire doors (if fitted correctly) keep out unwanted noise and drafts. If there is a room in your house that you want soundproofed or weatherproofed, our fire doors are the perfect solution.
Security
The construction of fire doors and their weight (approximately 40kg) offer superior security compared to traditional doors. Once these doors are locked, they are very difficult to break, giving you an extra layer of protection against unwanted intruders.
Peace Of Mind
Although it’s most common for people to make their garage doors fire-resistant, fire doors are also suitable throughout your whole house. At Doors Online, we have a range of fire doors in different designs that offer you fire protection and good aesthetics.
Pricing And Lead Times
Class E Fire Door Pricing
Our fire door prices are very competitive compared to what’s available in the market. The good news is that we also offer DISCOUNT on our fire door prices for projects that require high-volume fireproof doors.
Please take note of the following information:
- Purpose-made or custom-made fire doors are more expensive than our standard range because they are not on the shelf. We take extra time to make individual units.
- Our fire door listed prices are for the door only. Additional hardware and door frames will need to be purchased separately.
- Please review our fire door frames, which are necessary to ensure full compliance for both the fire door and its frame in your installation.
Class E Fire Door Lead Times
Many of the fire doors we offer are general stock items, so they can be dispatched reasonably quickly. However, to prepare the order for dispatching, we suggest working on a 7-to-10-day lead time.
Fire Door Installations
Please note it is essential to have the fire doors installed by a qualified carpenter and this is generally the single biggest contributing factor to door failures.
Please see the door installation guidelines for foolproof guidance on how to install doors.
The Class E Fire door assembly must be fully and properly installed to meet fire protection building regulations. Only then can a manufacturer’s fire compliance certificate be issued.
Additional components required for the Class E fire door installation:
- Treatment to ensure longevity and protection against wear and tear. (We provide raw doors)
- 3 x 100mm steel butt hinges not exceeding a height of 2.08m for the door frame.
Additional Considerations
If you purchase the door only, ensure all components meet the minimum standards set by the South African Bureau of Standards. All parts, including the fire door frame and hardware – hinges, locks, and handles – must be installed per the manufacturer’s specifications.
The door frame is crucial: a fire door must be fitted into a purpose-built fire-resistant frame, sold separately.
Door Online offers certified Wooden Fire Door frames with a 30-minute fire rating, designed to complement its fire doors. This frame measures 86mm x 67mm with a 25mm rebate.
